About mobility scooters and what the TravelScoot can do for you:

Disability comes in many forms, and there is no single vehicle that can meet everyone’s needs. Before you decide which mobility device is the best for you, do some research, especially on your own condition and on your desired activity.

Another important factor is whether you are on your own most of the time or you have a partner sharing your lifestyle; someone who could help with loading/unloading and setting up a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair.

If you cannot stand and walk at all, the TravelScoot or any other mobility scooter is NOT the right vehicle for you. An electric wheelchair is probably more suitable for your condition.

If you are still able to walk, you almost certainly don’t like to sit in a wheelchair, and you are in the market for a mobility scooter. Basically, you can choose between 3 and 4-wheeled mobility scooters. Providing that it is wide enough, the 4-wheeler is generally more stable, and if you are rather frail, this is probably your best choice. The 4-wheeler’s main disadvantages are its much higher weight, bulky size and shape, and limited maneuverability. Also, the portability of such a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair can be a real challenge unless you have a hitch platform with a retractable ramp on your car or van.

3-wheeled mobility scooters are usually used by persons with limited walking abilities but otherwise in fair shape. These mobility scooters are considerably lighter and have excellent maneuverability, which is great in crowded areas and inside stores or elevators. The portability of most 3-wheeled scooters is somewhat better than that of 4-wheelers, but still far from ideal. Some can be disassembled into a number of sections, and often the seller discloses only the weight of the heaviest part; leaving the total weight to anybody’s guess. Some scooters are advertised as light weight, but in fact most of them are not, they are merely "less heavy". With a minimum practical power source of 24 Volt and 12 Ah (Amp hours), such scooters can still weigh 100 pounds or more. If they weigh less, i.e. about 80 pounds, they are often declared to be ”light weight”, “feather light”, “micro light” , etc. Don’t be fooled by such names. Always determine the total weight, because you often have to handle the scooter as a complete unit, i.e. when no ramp is present between different levels. Even if the battery can be removed fairly easily (the one mentioned above weighs about 20 pounds), the remaining weight can still be rather hefty and challenging.

This situation was extremely dissatisfying to Hardy Huber, an mechanical engineer and amateur airplane builder, who badly hurt his legs in a hang gliding accident three decades ago. After an unsuccessful search for the right scooter for himself, he pursued a completely new design concept and applied weight-saving aviation technology and created a mobility scooter which is hard if not impossible to beat in terms of light weight and portability. He literally re-defined the word “light weight” in the world of mobility scooters. The entire frame consists of a mere 10 pounds of aircraft grade aluminum and 2 pound of steel hardware. The rest is wheels, seat, motor and controls. It folds and unfolds as quick and easy, almost like an umbrella.

The clever structural design (patented) is extremely sturdy; the limitation is not so much the weight of the rider but his or her circumference.

The closest competition to the TravelScoot in terms of weight and folded size is the Caddy Fold-N-Drive (similar versions are also sold under different names such as Easy Travel, Featherlite, Wheelcare Sportster, Lexis Light, Easy light, TravelMate and probably a few more.)
Its weight WITHOUT battery is about the same as the TravelScoot with battery INCLUDED.
The 12 Amp. battery weigh 20 lbs, which means that the Caddy and the like are about 40% heavier than the TravelScoot!
And finally, their folded dimensions are 36.5 x 24 x 18.5 inchs, which is FOUR TIMES LARGER than the TravelScoot ! (33.5 x 12 x 10)

Many scooter outlets advertise the Caddy, etc. for over $ 2200 and then discount them to about $1600

Besides its value to walking-impaired people, the TravelScoot can be a real work horse and time saver for trade show exhibitors, who often need make several trips on foot to cover the distance from the parking lot to their exhibit booths.

When Hardy sets up his booth at trade shows, his TravelScoot carries him (230 pounds) as well as a second, folded scooter across the frame, an extra battery and addition another two or three boxed scooters on a hand truck in tow.

Similar utility applies to airline travel. The carry-on luggage is draped across the frame and the check-in luggage is towed behind him, often with a second bag piggybacked on.(see demo video) After check-in, he is permitted to ride the TravelScoot right to the front of the airplane’s door, where he stores everything in the carrying bag. The airline transports it free of charge. Upon arrival, airline handlers deliver it to the airplane’s door. (See also Useful Tips For The Air Traveler.)

Without exaggerating, it can be said that the TravelScoot represents a quantum leap in mobility technology. With its unique design it stands alone in a class of its own.

While the TravelScoot is not intended as a full-time disability platform, it does provide instant mobility wherever you go. Unlike other scooters, there is no excuse to leave it at home because it would be too cumbersome or awkward to take it with you. Unless you travel by air, full disassembly is usually not required. To stow in a compact car, simply remove the battery and seat, fold the frame like an umbrella and store it in the trunk or back seat. If your car is larger, remove the battery, detach the backrest, lower the handlebar (this entire process takes only a few seconds) and load the remaining -30 pound skeleton into the storage area.
